Our Curriculum Intent
Our role at Comberton is to spark curiosity, creating a world of opportunity, awe and wonder for our children and staff.
We aim to equip our children with the knowledge, skills and values to lead productive, healthy and inspired lives in modern day Britain.
A Comberton Curriculum
Rationale
Comberton’s curriculum offer is one with our pupils at the heart. Our overriding aim is to equip children with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to become active, confident citizens in the time they are at our school, and as they progress to the next stage of their education. The Comberton curriculum is underpinned by our knowledge of the children and the community we serve, building upon their lived experiences to ensure high aspirations for all.
The following key principles are at the centre of our ambitious curriculum design and delivery:
- Promotion of curiosity, awe and wonder; staff engage pupils in learning through their own enthusiasm and genuine interest in what they teach, inspiring a love of learning
- A relevance to their lives: pupils must find learning meaningful to them
- Opportunities for real experiences upon which to broaden their learning and deepen understanding
- Striving for accuracy: the Comberton Community takes pride in all they do
- Knowing ourselves as learners: pupils are taught to reflect on what helps them learn, and employ strategies to develop successful learning behaviours and promote positive mental health and wellbeing
- Recognition of our school values of respect, responsibility, collaboration, tolerance, perseverance and determination as a golden thread
- Valuing the unique nature of each subject
- Fostering aspirations and a sense of place within the community and wider world: our children know they matter, and that the learning they undertake will equip them with the attitudes, knowledge and skills to pursue whatever they choose, knowing that they can make a difference
Curriculum Design
In each subject, key concepts have been identified and knowledge and skills mapped progressively, building on the foundations of the Early Years Curriculum. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge and understanding, with key vocabulary identified at each stage.
Our core values, supported by the British Values of: democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty; and the mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, are: |
|
Respect |
for all members of the school community; for the beliefs and ideas of others and the environment we create. |
Responsibility |
for our own actions, our own learning, and our pursuit of excellence. |
Tolerance |
celebrating and understanding differences, and learning from each other. |
Collaboration |
working together with different people for a common goal. |
Perseverance |
never, ever giving up. To be the best we can be. |
Determination |
to do the right thing and wanting to succeed. |
Alongside curriculum content, we strive to develop a range of learning behaviours and characteristics:
