Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Hello from Mrs Waters and Miss Haycocks!

As you will already know, we are the Year 1 teachers. You will also meet Mrs Astill and Mr Price who will be covering PPA in the Year 1 classes.

We will be based in the Year 1 classrooms, on the top playground. In the morning, you will wait on the top playground until the bell rings and you will be called in at 8.45am when you can sensibly walk into the classroom. We will meet you at our classroom door to welcome you in.

We have a limited amount of space as our pegs are inside the classroom, so please only bring your lunchbox (if you are not ordering a lunch), a water bottle and your book bag (book bags are preferred to rucksacks as these fit neatly in trays). Please do not bring any other items such as toys. If you know your child occasionally has toileting accidents, please send in a bag with some spare clothes and pants that can stay in school to cater for this.

Our PE lessons will be on Wednesdays. On this day, you will need to come into school in your proper PE kit (white t-shirt, black or navy shorts/joggers and trainers) as this will reduce the number of items in the classroom. In cold weather ensure you wear your joggers and a fleece. If your child has their ears pierced, please remove earrings for this day or cover them in tape.

Reading and Phonics are at the heart of the Year 1 curriculum. The children will be taught Phonics daily and at the end of each day we will enjoy a story together. Children will read regularly in school and we ask that you hear your child read at home a minimum of 3 times over the course of the week. Please record this in your child’s reading record. Children need to bring their reading record and book into school each day.

In Reception, you will have used the home-school communication book or Seesaw to record any concerns or questions. In Year 1 we encourage parents to talk to us or pass on any quick messages at the classroom door/drop off. Alternatively please feel free to book in for a longer chat or to email us at: year1@comberton.worcs.sch.uk .

In Year 1 we have points charts, in which we work as a team to get to 100 points. We decide as a class what our reward will be when we reach 100 points. The rewards could be an extra play time, golden time or maybe even watching a film!

We think that covers it all, but if you have any questions for us you can email us at year1@comberton.worcs.sch.uk and we’ll try our best to answer them.

Year 1 Team

Key Information

  • PE - The children will complete both outdoor and indoor PE on Wednesdays. Children will need to come dressed in their PE kit (proper kit please) on this day.
  • Reading book and reading record – Please bring these to school every day. Reading books will be changed every Monday and Thursday.

  • Library - Every Friday both Year 1 classes visit our school library. Children will get to choose a book to take home for the week. This book is one that an adult will need to read to them at home. Please remember to send library books back to school every Friday as children cannot choose a new one until the previous one has been returned.

  • A good attitude – We have lots to learn and we need to show good listening, determination, perseverance, tolerance, respect, collaboration and most importantly we need to take responsibility for our own learning.

Phonics

Phonics is key in helping children learn how to read and write. At the end of Year 1 children must take part in

a national phonics screening check to test whether they meet the standard for Year 1 phonics. Please support your children at home by helping them to practise their wordboxes and identify sounds within words when they are reading with you. If you have any questions about phonics please refer to the link below or your teachers.
